Cancer Surgery Recovery
Once cancer surgery is finished this does not mean that the end of the road has been reached. There will still be a long way to go and in many cases people will not be considered to be cancer free for five years. There are some obvious things that will need to be remembered when planning cancer surgery recovery and that is not to overdo it when you first get home from hospital. There will often be the need to carry out some sort of exercising to aid recovery but going home and trying to do the ironing and cleaning the next day is not to be recommended. Stretching gently will help with scarring and stop it from becoming too stiff and leaving certain movements difficult.
Hygiene is also going to be very important as there is no way you would want to get an infection. Your body is already likely to be weak and to further weaken it will make recovery harder. Tablets will need to be taken to clear up any infections and as you may already be on tablets relating to the cancer you will either be taking far more tablets than you would want or end up feeling ill as a result of the combination.
There will need to be time away from work and this needs to be arranged beforehand. Some organisations - but clearly not all – will try to get staff to come back early but it is important to take off all the time that is needed. There will be legal steps to follow and they will not be able to force you before the doctor says that you are ready to be signed off.
Cancer Surgery Recovery – Ovarian Cancer
This is one type of cancer surgery that needs rest for some weeks afterwards. There can be emotional as well as physical problems here as this will mean that there is now no chance of having children. Depending on your age this may not be an issue but for some who would have liked more children they have to deal with the fact that they cannot have them. Depending on what has been removed there may be the onset of the menopause so there will be symptoms of that to deal with as well as the cancer surgery recovery.
Cancer Surgery Recovery – Prostrate
To begin with there may have the need to have a catheter fitted to stop you needing to go to the bathroom. This will just drain urine continually and will need to be changed at regular intervals. Dressings are not as much of an issue as there are usually only 5 small entry holes and they will heal within a short period of time. There will be little left in the way of scars and depending on the level of surgery there may not be a great deal of recovery time needed.
Cancer Surgery Recovery – Colon
Rest is a major part of the recovery from colon cancer surgery. About a week will be spent in hospital and then once home you can become more active. Diet also helps and it is important not to eat food that will cause wind but high fibre food will help ease the colon back into use.
